Ultrasound
Ultrasound scans utilize high-frequency sound waves (that cannot be heard by the human ear) to produce real time images of structures within your body.
It is generally better at depicting soft tissue rather than bones or air filled structures (such as the lungs or intestines) inside the body.
Here are some examples of how ultrasound can be used:
- Breast ultrasound – for screening purposes or to evaluate abnormalities seen on a mammogram.
- Ultrasound of abdomen – to detect liver, gallbladder and kidney disorders.
- Guiding a needle biopsy – for example for breast abnormalities. When used for diagnostic purposes, ultrasound is very safe with no harmful effects. Please click here for preparation instructions for specific ultrasound scans.
